Five steps to finding the best international internships in 2023

Internships are an important steppingstone for young people into the professional world. Interning abroad can be a great way to launch your career despite the few challenges that come with it. This life-changing experience can open many doors, both in your professional and personal life. With the right planning, you can make the most of your experience and gain the skills and connections you need to succeed.

Here are the five steps you need to take to apply for an international internship:

1.    Start your research on time!

Knowing when to intern isn’t always a clear-cut answer. In fact, the best time to intern abroad will change, depending on your situation. Prior to applying for your internship, it’s important to know that the application process might take a while. Some companies hire all year long, but especially larger companies often have summer internship programs for which you need to apply for before a specific date. A lot of students choose to intern abroad during the summer when their academic schedules are less busy.

As a general rule of thumb, you should apply for an internship at least 3-6 months before its starting date. We advise you to start on time to have the most stress-free experience possible. International summer internships are very popular and many students apply for them. The earlier you apply, the more likely you are to secure your spot!

2.    Pick what kind of internship you want to apply for.

When you start looking into international internships, there always seems to be one major buzzkill: money. Where does one come up with the cash to fund this once in a lifetime experience? Picking a paid internship can be an option. Some companies offer to pay for daily transport costs or give you a lunch allowance.

Speaking of money: don’t forget to budget this entire experience. Costs can easily run up when you add accommodation, travel costs, insurances, food and other (unexpected) costs. Make sure to save up enough money to get you through this period.

3.    Choose a country and company.

Now that you’ve started your research, figured out what type of internship you want and planned your budget, it’s time to get to the fun part! What country would you like to intern in or is the company more important than the location? Depending on what company or country you choose, you’ll have to keep the following things in mind:

Language

English is the most spoken language in bigger companies and capitals. So, if your English is good, you should be just fine in most places. An international internships is also an opportunity to gain experience or practice a different language. Take this opportunity to fully submerge yourself into a new culture and language to feel like a real local.

Visa

Make sure you read up on visa requirements for your desired destination so that you’re able to enter the country and stay there legally. Visit your school’s administration or go to the specifics country ambassy website for more information.

4.    Need help? Use LinkedIn and job sites or attend career fairs and use on-campus resources.

If you don’t really know what company you would like to intern for, you can use different resources to get some inspiration. Job sites, LinkedIn and even your personal network can help you find the ideal international internship. Don’t be afraid to ask around, you never know the international connections your friends and family may have!

Can’t find anything online or in your close circle? Try career fairs and on campus resources.
Usually, schools have collaborations with different companies and international programs for student to intern abroad, so definitely look into that. Job fairs are a fun way to interactively get more information on your international internships. The different stands usually have lots of information in brochures and even students who’ll share their personal experiences.

5.    It’s time to apply! Update your CV and motivation letter.

Your resume plays a vital role in whether you’re considered for an internship or not. Take the time to ensure its up-to-date and as professional as possible before you begin the internship application process. Be sure to include any relevant experience and coursework that will help set you apart from other candidates. You can show of your personality by playing with your CV template and make it more creative.

You should also consider having someone else look at your resume to check for grammar, spelling and other issues that you may have missed. The more internships you apply for, the better your chances are to secure one.
